The root of destructive thinking is [burdened](Burdens) [parts](Parts). Due to conditioning and [trauma](Trauma), parts internalize beliefs about themselves that are often untrue and harmful. And [[Protectors]] turn these beliefs into action by engaging in roles that are protective in intent but are often now maladaptive. Many approaches to addressing this simply put a bandaid on the problem without healing the wound. [[CBT]], for example, encourages our protectors to suppress other parts with destructive thoughts. This can provide temporary relief, but the root of the problem remains dormant. And once the suppressing protector's guard is dropped, the suppressed part will often come back stronger. [[IFS]], on the other hand, addresses the root of destructive thinking by healing the [[Parts]] that are having these thoughts. See the [[The IFS process]] for more on how this works.
