[[David Deutsch]] argues that what separates a person from other entities is not a matter of biology. A person is an entity that can create knowledge or explanations: [[People are creative]]. Dogs cannot create knowledge or explanations. [[Parts]] can. Each [part](Parts) has its own thoughts, feelings, personality, perspective, beliefs, interests, capabilities, and memories. And each part can certainly create its own explanations of what's happened, what's happening, what's true, and what it needs to do to keep the system safe. If we assume parts are people, then we shouldn't coerce them: [[Coercion is wrong]]. Even if parts weren't people, they respond well to be treated as if they were: [[Parts like being treated like people]].
